Best Gaming Laptop of the Month – ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 Review
ASUS is well known for their ROG (Republic of Gamers) series of gaming laptops and desktops. Today we’re gonna be reviewing the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons.
- 1. Form Factor
- 2. Price
- 3. Graphics
- 4. Processor
- 5. Memory
- 6. HDD
- 7. Portability
- 1. Black material as shell leaves finger prints
- 2. Optical Drive
The form factor of the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 is amazing. With a nice 15 inch screen and coming in at only 6 lbs, this is the closest thing you’ll get to an affordable gaming laptop. The Razer Blade cost about twice as much as the ROG but is much slimmer.
The ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 only costs $1,100. It’s bigger brothers from the G751-DS72 line-up has secured prime spots from top publishers such as Digital Trends and Tech Radar with a top recommendation from LaptopNinja in their gaming laptops 2015 guide. Built on the same hardware and chassis base, compared to other gaming laptops, this is a stand-out budget gaming laptop. You get a portable gaming laptop with good graphics and a great processor for only $1100. That is a deal. Compared to the Razer Blade and an Alienware 15, you get the whole package with this ROG.
The graphics are phenomenal. It comes packed with a GTX 960M which is the latest in the GTX series. It’s the base card for the new 900M series and for the price is very good. Benchmarks show it can play most modern day games on high like Battlefield 4, but if you start pushing the card at ultra, you may run into some frame rate issues. For $1100, being able to play most games on high, that’s not something common.
The processor also is definitely a steal for the price. It comes with the Inter i7 4720HQ processor that comes in clocked at 2.6 GHz, but can be overclocked to 3.6 GHz. A 4 core processor, but with hyper threading technology, allows the user to use the 8 other threads to their processing power. This is useful for programs such as Solidworks or Photoshop for rendering objects. It also helps speed up every day tasks including surfing the web, Word documents, launching programs, coding, and much more.
Along with the processor, it is coupled with 16 GB of RAM. This allows for more memory usage when it comes to very memory-intensive programs like Solidworks and Photoshop. It also speeds up everyday tasks as well and leaves you with more then enough RAM for the average user.
The HDD is 1 TB worth and has enough room to last you a long time. With the i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM, your laptop will booting up the OS from your HDD fast.
The portability for the price of this ROG is very surprising. At only 6 pounds, you get a very nice gaming laptop for an affordable price. While being generally light, it is also a gaming power house for when on the go. It’s durability and light weight makes this the ultimate budget gaming laptop.
A con of this amazing budget gaming laptop is the material they used for the casing of it. It is like a black, slick, and shiny material that looks amazing at first sight, until you touch it. Fingerprints will scatter your laptop by the end of the first day of having it.
Another con is the flimsy optical drive. The optical drive feels as if you could snap it right off when it is fully extended. It makes for some very bad accidents if your not careful with it.
Overall, theASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 is a great budget laptop for the price. It gives you a mobile gaming laptop while still being affordable to its audience. I would recommend this gaming laptop to anyone on a budget or looking into a gaming laptop. You can’t go wrong for this price.
